S. Maria di Leuca. resides at the point where the
Ionian and Adriatic seas meet. At the crossroads of
eastern and western cultures, sitting at the extreme
point of the heel of Italy, it gives its visitors the
impression of being on a spacial and temporal border,
of being in the so-called "finibus terrae." A stone
cross, at Capo di S. Maria di Leuca, near the famous
sanctuary, recalls the Jubilee pilgrimmage of 1900, in
a land which it is said was part of the passage of
Saint Peter in his work of consecreation, as
symbolized by the Corinthian column in 1694. The
sanctuary rose on the place where a temple dedicated
to the goddess Minerva is said to have existed, and
constitutes the door of access to paradise according
to the Christian faith.

Torre Vado, marina of the town of Morciano di Leuca,
is situated on the Ionian at approximately 6 km from
Leuca, where the rocky coast lowers and becomes smooth
for bathers. To the west begins kilometers of
enchanting sandy beach. It all seems kissed by the
heavens, with the horizon that opens in a sweet
embrace and a sun that immerses all in an unreal
light. Also beautiful are the landscape still
untouched by man and the sweet breeze that comes from
the sea. Torre Vado is home to innumerable festivals,
theatre, and shows of fashion and culture in sync with
the urgent rhythm of the folkloric "pizzica" as well
as the culture and traditions of the people of this
place.

Gallipoli. The "bella citta'" is situated on a suggestive island,
was connected to the modern world via a bridge
constructed in 1500. The ancient section of Gallipoli
is surrounded by the so-called "rivieras" which
provide the whole area with a sense of compactness.
There is a rich and interesting presence of Baroque
works of art, including churches and monuments. The
absence of industrial complexes renders it more in
tune with nature, characteristic of the city. In the
city center we find the beautiful Baroque cathedral,
rich in paintings of the epoch. Also notable are the
palaces and churches, emerging from the SVI and SVIII
centuries, like the Churches of the Purita', S.
Teresa, and S. Francesco; their decors alternate
between Leccese stone, tophus carpus, and majolica.
The interiors are also interesting, characterized by
vibrant colors, flowers, and fruits, all in majolica.
